Eric Alexander • Second Impression

Review from DownBeat (by Yoshi Kato):
Since he began recording under his own name almost 25 years ago, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has led at least 15 sessions with double bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth -- frequently rounded out by pianist and mentor Harold Mabern (the respected pianist was a teacher for classmates Alexander and Farnsworth at William Paterson University).

Second Impression features Mabern, Farnsworth and, in what was likely his final recording session, bassist Bob Cranshaw, who was name-checked in the spoken-word introduction to the Alexander composition "Blueski For Vonski" on his 2014 Chicago Fire album.

The "second impression" may subconsciously be a nod to a trio of atypical tracks that feature Cranshaw on an electric bass guitar and Mabern on a Fender Rhodes that were both found in the studio, as the liner notes explain. Farnsworth's funky "Jennie's Dance" struts assuredly with an authoritative and somewhat surprising extended solo by the pianist on that cult-worthy keyboard.

Sammy Fain and Paul F. Webster's "Secret Love" is buoyed by the partially electrified rhythm section. Alexander solos with elan while Mabern glides in another expanded exploration just prior to Farnsworth's demonstration in rhythmic fluency.

The Wes Montgomery classic "Full House" closes out Second Impressions with flair; the bandleader's spry tone matches the spirit of the piece, and Cranshaw seems to subtly propel the group forward with his note choices and reliable ease.

Frode Kjekstad • A Piece of the Apple

Liner Notes / Review (by Randy Johnston):
Frode's guitar playing is a blend of great ideas, intense technical facility, crisp and clear tone, and swinging time, all delivered with an intense emotionalism reminiscent not of the Scandinavian 'cool school', but of the finest American hard groovers. Appearing on this set of five Kjekstad originals, three standards, and one jazz original (Eddie Harris' classic 'Cold Duck Time') along with the guitarist are three of New York City's finest musicians: organist Mike LeDonne, saxophonist Eric Alexander, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. These gentlemen need no introduction to serious jazz fans, and they play beautifully together on this album which will touch your soul and get your feet tapping as well.

Joe Farnsworth • City Of Sounds

The drummer Joe Farnsworth is not a household name, but it’s a sure bet that he can be found on the speed dial of many a vaunted jazz figure around town. Resolutely unflashy, this most swinging of percussionists can spark any band with his perfect time and unwavering attention to detail. On his new album as a leader, “City of Sounds,” the selfless journeyman is joined by two expert players, the bassist Peter Washington and Kenny Barron, the dean of mainstream jazz piano. Unsurprisingly, the session works like a dream: trim, skillful, and as rhythmically vibrant as the metropolis that the recording celebrates.

Harold Mabern • Mr. Lucky

Review
by Ken Dryden
It was hard to miss Sammy Davis Jr. during the 1960s, as he was prominent on the radio with a number of hits, as well as singing, dancing, and doing comedy on TV and acting in films. Yet the contributions of this talented entertainer have been overlooked since his death in 1990. Harold Mabern has long thought of paying tribute to him and this 2012 release conveys the joy of Davis on-stage, even without vocals. The pianist is joined by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, with a mix of songs from musicals, movies and Davis' hit records. The quartet's swinging take of "Mr. Lucky" features strong solos by Mabern and Alexander, a working relationship that dates back to the dawn of the tenor saxophonist's career two decades earlier. Mabern's "Soft Shoe Trainin' with Sammy" fits the late entertainer perfectly, an upbeat dance number with the pianist emulating Davis' adept dancing, an intricate solo by Webber, and Alexander's robust tenor, all driven by Farnsworth's light brushwork. Alexander's vocal-like tenor is the centerpiece of the driving take of "Night Song." Mabern's touching piano solo of "Hey There" is elegant and romantic; it is easy to imagine an approving Davis standing by his side, singing with him. The rhythm section's subtle take of "What Kind of Fool Am I?" utilizes plenty of space, with Mabern's shimmering piano supported flawlessly by his bandmates. https://www.allmusic.com/album/mr-lucky-a-tribute-to-sammy-davis-jr-mw0002405655

David Hazeltine • Blues For Gerry

Editorial Review:
Pianist David Hazeltine has a history with Criss Cross. To be specific, between 1995 and 2010, Gerry Teekens, the label's founder, presented eight albums on which Hazeltine led trios, quartets and quintets featuring his impeccable, individualistic pianism, original compositions and arrangements; another five with the cooperative all-star sextet One For All (tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trombonist Steve Davis, trumpeter Jim Rotondi, bassists Peter Washington or John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth), whose grooving, harmonically acute charts bear his stamp; and another 17 as a sideman with the aforementioned luminaries, trumpeter Brian Lynch, alto saxophonist Jim Snidero, and other high-level jazzfolk who now hold pride of place in the hardcore jazz ecosystem.
Hazeltine returns to the fold with Blues For Gerry, his first Criss Cross leader date since Inversions (2010, Criss 1326), a lovely quintet date that included Alexander and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Recorded in a single six-hour session on December 1, 2022, it's his third state of the art trio recital for Criss Cross with modern masters Peter Washington and Joe Farnsworth, following the equally accomplished Perambulation (2005, Criss 1276) and Close To You (2003, Criss 1247).
The album was recorded December 1, 2022 at the Samurai Hotel Recording Studio in NY. Recording engineer Mike Marciano also did the editing, mixing and mastering at Systems Two in NY. Photography by Anna Yatskevich.

(2003, Criss 1247).
